Mexican Lifestyle

Mexico currently has approximately 106 million inhabitants, unevenly distributed across the country.

Almost a quarter of the population lives in the capital, "Ciudad de México” (Mexico City) that with about 20 million inhabitants is considered the largest metropolis in the world. The densest population can be found in the small state of Tabasco with 60 inhabitants per square kilometer, the lowest is in Quintana Roo with only 10 inhabitants per square kilometer. The annual growth rate of population in the country is around 2%.

With a proportion of about 10% of Indians, Mexico is one of the largest indigenous Latin American countries, even though a clear delineation between Mestizo and Indio is not very easy. The most important criteria are that they have their own language, but also tribal costume and a sense of belonging to a community are intended to distinguish. Consequently, 56 tribes live in Mexico today and about 100 different dialects are spoken by them. Especially in the area of Yucatán and Chiapas, the Indians are numerous. Historically, they are the people of the Maya, whose offspring belong to the numerically largest Indio community of the country.

Without exaggeration, Mexico can be called “country of festivals”. At least they don’t have a lack of reasons to make a “fiesta”. Some cities of the Yucatán peninsula, particularly Mérida and Campeche, devotedly maintain their colonial traditions. There is no day without a free dance and music performance that keeps the cultural heritage of the region alive - what a difference from the commercial entertainment programs in the important centers for tourism like Cancún or Playa del Carmen.
