Yucatán

Yucatán is the name of the Mexican peninsula as well as the name of one of its states. The peninsula Yucatán is located in the East of Mexico between the Gulf of Mexico in the west (94° W) and the Caribbean in the east (87° W). The peninsula's territorial range is about 165.000 square kilometers, distributed between the federal states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Campeche with a coastline of 1.600 kilometers. About 4,7 million people live on the peninsula, 25% are ancestors of the Mayans. Therefore besides Spanish you also hear different Mayan dialects.

The most important cities of Yucatán are Mérida (925.000 inh.), Cancún ( 500.000 inh.), Chetumal (170.000 inh.) and Campeche (200.000 inh.).

Yucatán offers you juicy green vegetation on the one side and the deep blue Caribbean Sea with its little turquoise islands on the other side. Just 30 years ago the coast along the Caribbean was a forgotten part of Mexico. Today the coast is well organized with perfect accommodations, obliging services, great restaurants and frequent bus connections along the multi-lane highways.

The region has made an enormous economic revival in the past decades. The coast of Yucatán is long and offers something for everybody. The Riviera Maya covers more than 150 miles of the peninsula. It is a paradise for adventurer - here you can still find undiscovered romantic places. Just hang your hammock between the palm trees and enjoy the beauty created by nature. If you want to visit the country “more intensive” you will be rewarded by unforgettable impressions. Try the wide offer of organized trips, rent a car or make use of the excellent network of public transportation.

The state of Yucatán is bordered on the north by the Gulf of Mexico, on the east and southeast by Quintana Roo, and on the west and southwest by Campeche. The state's territorial range is about 40.000 square kilometers; it has 106 municipalities and its capital is the City of Mérida. Two international airports in Yucatán, one in Mérida and the other in Chichén Itzá, are served by 7 airlines connecting the state with national and international tourism. The southeast of Mexico, like the rest of the country and Central America, is linked by an efficient system of roads and highways, such as those leading to Cancun, Campeche and the port of Progreso.

Yucatán is full of historical sites of the Mayas and an extraordinary nature. Here you can find Maya ruins, fantastic beaches of the Caribbean, magnificent haciendas, deep blue cenotes, mysterious caves and a biodiversity of exotic animals.

Come and experience a new world - Yucatán!
